Director Urban Movement

John is Director of Urban Movement, a consultancy specialising in transport planning and the design of urban streets and spaces. With a Transport MSc from Imperial/UCL and a background in traffic engineering, he has over 35 years of professional experience.

A champion of better, healthier, more inclusive streets, John’s professional reputation is based on project work that encompasses a wide range of transport planning, traffic engineering and street design projects in towns and cities all over the UK.

John's a transport and design advisor to several UK authorities, a past Chair of the Transport Planning Society, a former trustee of Living Streets, a member of the Travel Demand Commission, and one of the London Mayor’s Design Advocates. He’s also been author of the monthly ‘Street Talk’ article in Local Transport Today since 2005.

John Dales

John Dales is a traffic engineer, transport planner and urban realm designer and have been involved with urban design for more than three decades. In 2011 John founded Urban Movement. Driven by environmental, public health, placemaking and economic priorities, everything they do seeks to make walking, cycling and public transport more attractive; to minimise the need for private car travel in urban areas; and to maximise the value of the public realm in meeting the challenges of climate change, urban growth, inactive lifestyles, and social exclusion.
